How to Find a 24-Hour Pharmacy in Australia

By Pharmacy Finder editorial team. Updated . 6 minute read.

General information

This guide is general information, not personal medical advice, and may change over time. With any medicine, always read the label and use only as directed, and if symptoms persist see your doctor or health care professional. Check anything that affects you with your pharmacist or GP. In an emergency, call 000.

Genuine 24-hour pharmacies are rare in Australia. As of May 2026, only about seven community pharmacies trade round-the-clock across the whole country, and they cluster in just a few capital-city locations. Most pharmacies that advertise long hours are late-trading, not open all night. When you need medication overnight or on a public holiday, what helps is knowing where the genuine 24-hour sites are, how to find what's open near you right now, and what to do when nothing is.

Why genuine 24/7 pharmacies are uncommon

Two things make all-night pharmacies hard to run. A registered pharmacist has to be on the premises the whole time a pharmacy is open, so overnight shifts are expensive to staff. And demand drops sharply late at night in most suburbs. Without state-government funding to cover the gap, 24-hour trade is commercially unviable in most locations.

South Australia is the clearest example of what funding can do: the SA Health 24/7 Pharmacies program, backed by $2.5 million a year from the state government, supports four sites that trade round-the-clock. Victoria is the clearest example of what happens when funding goes away: the Victorian Supercare program previously funded 20 pharmacies for 24-hour trade. After the state cut funding on 1 January 2024, the remaining Supercare sites scaled back overnight hours. Only one former Supercare pharmacy, in Craigieburn north of Melbourne, now continues to trade 24/7 independently.

The full verified state-by-state list is below.

Check what's open near you first

Pharmacy hours change. Sites close, rebrand, or adjust their trading hours, and a printed list goes stale fast. For anything that isn't on the verified directory below, check live availability rather than a fixed list.

Pharmacy Finder's open-now view shows pharmacies open at the current time, based on their registered hours. The late-night view lists pharmacies that trade well into the evening. Filter either one by your state, city, or suburb to see what's actually within reach tonight.

If you check and nothing nearby is open, the rest of this guide covers what to do.

What to do when no pharmacy is open

If you need medication in the middle of the night and nothing in your area is open, you have four practical options. None of them mean driving to the nearest CBD on the chance something is trading.

Option 1: Call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222

A registered nurse answers 24/7. They can tell you whether your situation needs immediate care, whether it can safely wait until pharmacies open, and whether continued dispensing might apply. For most after-hours medication questions, this is the most useful first call.

Option 2: Call an after-hours home doctor

After-hours home-doctor services send a bulk-billed GP to your home across many metro and regional postcodes. 13 SICK is one national service. If you need a prescription urgently and have no script on hand, a home visit is often faster than an emergency department.

Option 3: Hospital emergency department

If the situation is genuinely urgent (chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe injury, suspected overdose, a mental-health crisis), call 000 or go straight to the nearest emergency department. Hospital pharmacies dispense for their own patients, not the general public, so this is the right route only for a real emergency.

Option 4: Same-day pharmacy delivery

In most metro areas, several pharmacy delivery services run extended hours and can get medication to your door within a couple of hours during evening windows. Our guide to pharmacy delivery in Australia covers how it works, what it costs, and the cold-chain rules.

Late-trading pharmacies as the practical default

For most overnight medication needs, a pharmacy open until late evening is enough. You can wait an hour, drive a short distance, and fill your script. Genuine 24/7 pharmacies matter in a narrow set of cases: a 3am need, a public-holiday emergency, or when nobody in your household can collect on your behalf.

For everything else, the late-trading network plus a fallback plan covers it. Check the late-night view and filter to your area.

When delivery beats a late-night pharmacy run

Same-day delivery has changed how overnight access works. If a pharmacy in your area offers same-evening delivery and you order before their cut-off, you can get medication without leaving home. For chronic-disease medication (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, antidepressants), planning the refill a few days early almost always beats a late-night pharmacy run.

There's one exception. Some medicines can only be collected in person, including Schedule 8 medicines that need pharmacist verification and the first dose of opioid replacement therapy. For those, a late-trading or 24-hour pharmacy is still the only option.

Frequently asked questions

Around seven community pharmacies trade round-the-clock across the country, as verified in May 2026. Four are in South Australia under the SA Health 24/7 Pharmacies program (Hallett Cove, Norwood, Salisbury Plain, Clovelly Park), one in New South Wales (Penrith), one in Victoria (Craigieburn), and one in Queensland (Annerley in Brisbane). A hospital pharmacy at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane also trades 24 hours but limits access to patients. Tasmania, the ACT, the Northern Territory and Western Australia have no verified walk-in 24/7 community pharmacy at the time of writing.

How Same-Day Pharmacy Delivery Works in Australia

Your prescription can be at your front door inside 90 minutes in most Australian metro postcodes. Same-day pharmacy delivery went from a chain-pharmacy experiment in 2022 to a standard service in 2026. Most metro pharmacies now offer it, either through their own couriers or third-party services like Chemist2U and Hola Health.
